Eat More Honey, Honey!
Did you know that eating RAW honey has many benefits? You might know this or maybe not? Read on…
I was such a lucky kid! Growing up I only knew of the freshest honey since my grandparent were Beekeepers. For many years, my Papa Bill kept between 15-20 hives in his backyard. He was a well known beekeeper in the Midwest area. My grandpa, Bill Buckley was the go-to guy for educating on all things bee’s, starting and maintaining hives, and humanely gathering in the bee’s when they decided to swarm. He was SO amazing! I am honored that he was my beloved grandpa, and I’m glad I have the memories to continue to share his story.
As the go-to beekeeper in our area, he would supply other beekeepers their “starter” hives in the spring. There was one week in April that we didn’t like going to my grandparents house. Why, you ask? Because there were an abundance of honey bee’s flying all over the front yard and we were sissy girls. (By we I mean my mom, sisters & I) We, like most people were afraid of them. Cause, who wants to get stung by a bee, right!? Thankfully with his great knowledge, we knew how important they are for pollinating our food so we respected the honey bee’s.
Let me share about my grandma Dotty. She was the known as the creative one with honey. She was always mixing up delicious treats like honey-peanut butter, whipping it up to make the honey light and fluffy, and incorporating it in her baking! I cannot forget to mention putting fresh honey on our pancakes and waffles too! Mmmm, it was so delicious. She was also known as the “doctor”. If anyone had any cold-like symptoms, a sore throat, a burn, cut, or blemish Dotty had the remedy. She said, “Put honey on it!” or “Take a spoonful of honey!” Well, she knew her stuff! Taking honey products always made us feel better. We chewed on propolis and honey comb if we had scratchy throats, and at night drank one of her concoctions called warm “Honey butter-milk” She said it would help us sleep better… and it always did. Ahhh, the memories.
Still to this day I use raw honey to sooth a sore throat or just take a spoonful to feel the comfort or kick a sweet craving. My mom still has the last of their honey which brings back fond memories. BTW, honey is the only food that last forever. It never spoils! (which is another cool fact about raw honey)
